I’ve always believed the direct approach is best. This does not mean texting, dropping a post-it note, leaving a phone message or sending an e-mail. Instead meet at a local place such as a restaurant or coffee nook. Lower the boom gently and include the attentive statement. Make sure this is what you really want. There’s probably no turning back after the news is received and processed.
