BART Officer Arrested in Nevada
Wednesday, January 14 2009

The BART police officer who shot Oscar Grant III during several arrests has been taken into custody by the police in Nevada.

I'm not quite sure why the ex-officer was even in Nevada in the first place. You would think that a shooting and a death would be cause for authorities to keep the officer close by during an investigation.

Contrary to what many people think, BART police are not glorified rent-a-cops with guns, they are actual sworn police officers with guns. While looking at the video, it's a bit hazy to tell how it really happened, but it doesn't look great. There is no need to shoot anyone who is already on the ground with another officer on top of him. However, I wasn't there, so I don't know if the gun went off accidentally or what.

In any event, I personally don't believe that a gun should have even been drawn at that point. Am I wrong, or should guns only be fired if death or harm looks eminent to yourself or others? I mean, if a person is getting ready to fire a gun at you or at other people, then it might be time to shoot them in the hand or leg or something... but when a man is down on the ground (struggling, or not!), it seems to me that a gun is the worst thing to bring out!

I do know it requires an investigation and I think the family of the man killed are justified in filing a $25 million lawsuit in a death that appears to be unnecessary.

For those who haven't seen the video, take a look and see what you think of it
