Fox News Disappoints, as Usual
Tuesday, January 20 2009

So as I was glued to the television yesterday watching the historical inauguration of Barack Obama on various channels from network to pbs, I thought it might be interesting to switch over Fox News to see how they are covering it.

I was disappointed, but not surprised.

In the first few seconds, I heard the words 'democrats', 'Bush royalty' and 'shows how great the Bush family is'.

Never once on any of the other channels did I hear the words democrats or republicans.

Why is it that only Fox News was mentioning political parties and divisiveness? Why was it that Fox News was the only one to say that every nice, good thing during the inauguration (like the embrace between the past and present presidents) was due to the graciousness and greatness of the Bush family (rather than the greatness of our leaders in general)?

After the oath, Fox reports that Barack Obama stumbled with the words. Obama froze because he knew they were backwards and it was the Chief Justice who stumbled. However Fox reported it differently - with Chris Wallace even semi-joking that Obama may not be the legitimate president.

Now, many conservatives will claim it's because nearly all of the media is comprised of "liberal, left wing" thinkers, thereby being 'pro Obama'. I happen to think it's the flip side, that the likes of Fox News are promoting separation and inducing battle.

I believe this is how our country got into this mess in the first place. Separation, partisanship and battle mentality - with the constant cries of "Us versus Them" from both sides.

I think Barack Obama's speech about improving our stance in the world, about stopping the quibbling and about unity was just what needed to be said. If we can't stand together as a nation, we can't stand at all.

I'm sure the Fox News people, the Rush Limbaughs and the other extremists of the world will keep trying to build walls and slinging accusations. However, I'm hoping that the rest of us, the beams and strength of this country, will throw away our partisanship, our anger and our egos to support our country and our president - whether you voted for him or not.

Remember one thing: your president will do a far better job if he has your support than if he doesn't.

Support your president, support your country and have hope and vision and confidence in the future. It's your duty and your privilege as an American.
